{"id":2033,"date":"2020-12-12T15:00:28","date_gmt":"2020-12-12T15:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiofree.org\/?p=138532"},"modified":"2020-12-12T15:00:28","modified_gmt":"2020-12-12T15:00:28","slug":"switzerland-puts-sanctions-on-belaruss-lukashenka-officials-over-protest-crackdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/radiofree.asia\/2020\/12\/12\/switzerland-puts-sanctions-on-belaruss-lukashenka-officials-over-protest-crackdown\/","title":{"rendered":"Switzerland Puts Sanctions On Belarus&#8217;s Lukashenka, Officials Over Protest Crackdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img src=\"https:\/\/www.radiofree.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/06ffc8e8-360d-40d4-81b6-ff91c9ed9a10_w1200_r1.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"wsw\">\n<p>Switzerland has become the latest country to freeze the financial assets of Belarusian strongman Alyaksandr Lukashenka.<\/p>\n<p>The Swiss government announced on December 12 that Lukashenka, his son Viktar, and 13 other Belarusians connected with the Lukashenka regime had been banned from entering or transiting through Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>The sanctioned officials are all believed to be involved in the violent suppression of protests that have swept Belarus since the disputed August 9 presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Switzerland is deeply concerned by the ongoing tensions and is calling for dialogue between the Belarus government and civil society,&#8221; the Swiss government said in announcing the sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>Official results of that poll gave Lukashenka a sixth presidential term, but the election has been widely criticized as rigged.<\/p>\n<p>Since the election, the opposition has held regular protests, most of which have been met with harsh repression by the police.<\/p>\n<p>According to the United Nations, more than 27,000 people have been detained.
