While the movement has been active since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2015\/jul\/19\/blacklivesmatter-birth-civil-rights-movement\">2013<\/a>, it regained momentum and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanary.co\/global\/world-news\/2020\/06\/06\/black-lives-matter-protests-spread-to-three-continents\/\">worldwide<\/a> recognition following the police killing of George Floyd in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanary.co\/trending\/2020\/05\/28\/the-police-killing-of-george-floyd-sparks-widespread-anger-and-protests-throughout-the-us\/\">2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Black Lives Matter Twitter account acknowledged the nomination saying &#8220;We&#8217;re only getting started&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HxFohjeb2PU3B5pLE7a9NIzutqk8R1Y6ZM0nXdTfwKvGsCSDymQ\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We hold the largest social movement in global history. Only national politicians can submit nominations to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/nomination\/peace\/\">Norwegian Nobel Committee<\/a>.
