Rachel Mathews, PETA Foundation Deputy Director of Captive Animal Law Enforcement (CALE), talks with Emil Guillermo about the AZA's announced ban on bullhooks in the training of elephants.<\/p>
Bullhooks terrorize elephants, yet there has been a reluctance to ban them outright.<\/p>
After years of piecemeal bans by states and jurisdictions, the AZA-the Association for Zoos and Aquariums--which sets the standard for zoos in this country,\u00a0 has come out with a ban on bullhooks that will improve the lives of all elephants in captivity.<\/p>
PETA has been working for years on the ban, and hails this day as a milestone victory for the animals.<\/p>
