However, rent payments may continue to pile up for tenants.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A moratorium enacted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been in place for months to help stem the spread of COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h-when-is-the-cdc-s-eviction-moratorium-set-to-expire\"><strong>When is the CDC\u2019s eviction moratorium set to expire?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On July 31, 2021.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h-what-should-i-know-about-the-eviction-moratorium\"><strong>What should I know about the eviction moratorium?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Tenants must meet certain qualifications and present the CDC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/downloads\/EvictionDeclare_d508.pdf\">declaration form<\/a> to their landlord.&nbsp;<\/li><li>They still owe rent payments.&nbsp;<\/li><li>They can still be charged fees or penalties for submitting late rent payments.<\/li><li>The moratorium only protects tenants from being evicted for not paying rent. It doesn\u2019t protect them from being evicted for other legal reasons.<\/li><li>Federal judges have both upheld and overturned the moratorium. Every state is different. Here\u2019s a state-by-state guide from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hud.gov\/states\">U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development<\/a>, where you can find updates and the resources available to you. You can also find a <a href=\"https:\/\/evictionlab.org\/covid-policy-scorecard\/\">scorecard for each state from Eviction Lab<\/a>, which researches housing insecurity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h-what-will-happen-once-the-eviction-moratorium-is-lifted\"><strong>What will happen once the eviction moratorium is lifted?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s unclear, but <a href=\"https:\/\/publicintegrity.org\/health\/coronavirus-and-inequality\/evictions-moratorium-expires-wednesday\/\">we reported<\/a> that the <a href=\"https:\/\/nlihc.org\/\">National Low Income Housing Coalition<\/a> and its group of more than 850 organizations in the Disaster Housing Recovery Coalition sent a letter to cabinet secretaries in the Biden administration on June 14. It urged them to extend and strengthen the moratorium and recommended increasing awareness of rental assistance programs.
