{"id":24383,"date":"2021-02-03T09:01:09","date_gmt":"2021-02-03T09:01:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiofree.org\/?p=157753"},"modified":"2021-02-03T09:01:09","modified_gmt":"2021-02-03T09:01:09","slug":"uzbek-blogger-critical-of-local-governor-arrested-for-alleged-extortion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/radiofree.asia\/2021\/02\/03\/uzbek-blogger-critical-of-local-governor-arrested-for-alleged-extortion\/","title":{"rendered":"Uzbek Blogger Critical Of Local Governor Arrested For Alleged Extortion"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img src=\"https:\/\/www.radiofree.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/7BD05227-1192-437E-BD40-678F9B1322AD_w1200_r1-1.png\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"wsw\">\n<p>TERMIZ, Uzbekistan &#8212; An Uzbek blogger critical of the local government in the southern Surxondaryo region has been arrested on charges that relatives say are trumped up.<\/p>\n<p>Otabek Sattoriy was charged by the Interior Ministry\u2019s investigative department on February 1 on extortion charges.<\/p>\n<p>That came days after Sattoriy was taken from his home on January 29 by plainclothes security officers, his sister Farangiz Alimova told RFE\/RL\u2019s Uzbek Service on February 2.<\/p>\n<p>Alimova <a class=\"wsw__a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ozodlik.org\/a\/31082434.html\">provided RFE\/RL with security-camera footage<\/a> of the moment of her brother&#8217;s detainment.<\/p>\n<p>Alimova cited the blogger&#8217;s lawyer as saying that Sattoriy had been charged with extorting cash and a mobile phone from unnamed individuals.<\/p>\n<p>According to Sattoriy&#8217;s relatives, a court in Termiz ruled on February 1 to place Sattoriy in pretrial detention.<\/p>\n<p>They insist the charges against the blogger are fabricated.<\/p>\n<p>The 40-year-old blogger has been known as a harsh critic of the region&#8217;s governor Tora Bobolov.
