Meanwhile, over hundreds of activist organisations and individuals around the world have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onebillionrising.org\/afghanistan\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">pledged<\/a> support for the Afghan women facing oppression by the Taliban.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Courageous<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On 4 September, women protesters attempted to march to the presidential palace in Kabul. But the Taliban attacked them with tear gas:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"WhnoChG524MxvZRkcdRcOVL7pgleTQJSEHz9ZsxQ0BSzPkaYIi31UHt4EqAyfdMr1\"><iframe title=\"Taliban violently stop women protesters from marching to Presidential Palace in Kabul: Reports\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/N4NrNn8Zk8c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The women demanded there be no recognition of Taliban government without the full participation of women in politics and without recognition of their right to work. Tear gas was reportedly used to disperse the demonstrators and one woman allegedly beaten. Women also reportedly demonstrated in Herat and other regional cities.<\/p>\n<p>More protests followed:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"P0ZopGRtNVvS1bYEksxhrjTyQFa\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Kabul right now. Brave women protesting and chanting \u201cfreedom.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/wxstxHcRHl\">pic.twitter.com\/wxstxHcRHl<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Farnaz Fassihi (@farnazfassihi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/farnazfassihi\/status\/1435135711158620163?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 7, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Taliban fired in the air to disperse these protesters (parts of this footage may be distressing for some readers):<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"UFcfo2XTww7HnmIXplSoeDEukGh5SzVEdTgn9N5xHKPMpK8LaZ1W0zFyBDMNARYkjWQI9GVxJC438JR\"><iframe title=\"Afghanistan crisis: Taliban disperse Kabul protests with gunfire\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ascG49jrIik?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Despite a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efe.com\/efe\/english\/portada\/afghans-continue-anti-taliban-protests-despite-ban\/50000260-4625147\"  rel=\"noopener\">ban<\/a> by the Taliban on demonstrations, protests continued in Kabul and other cities such as Takhar, Parwan, Badakshan, and Ghazni.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Solidarity pledges<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Meanwhile over 370 activist organisations and hundreds of individuals have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onebillionrising.org\/afghanistan\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">pledged<\/a> to take to the streets on 25 September in support of Afghan women.<\/p>\n<p>Their demands are as follows:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Refuse to recognize a Taliban government, which has no legitimacy beyond the brutal force it commands, and which terrorizes the people of Afghanistan, girls and women in particular.<\/li>\n<li>Stop all forms of support to the Taliban, including funding, providing of arms, and technical know-how.<\/li>\n<li>End imperialism, militarism, fascism and religious fundamentalism. Cut the Pentagon Budget.<\/li>\n<li>Stop and prevent manipulating women\u2019s rights for commercial and other interests.<\/li>\n<li>Support the women\u2019s resistance to the Taliban inside Afghanistan. Respect and support Afghan women and people\u2019s exercise of their democratic and human rights, including their right to self-determination.<\/li>\n<li>Evacuate women and men, human rights defenders, journalists, police officers, public employees, athletes, and LGBTI+ who wish to leave the country and ensure their safe passage.<\/li>\n<li>Create an independent body of observers, made up with a majority of women, who have a track record of promoting women\u2019s human rights to monitor the situation in Afghanistan.<\/li>\n<li>Welcome refugees, with the US and their allies assuming the responsibility of financing the cost of resettling displaced people from Afghanistan.<\/li>\n<li>Immediately open humanitarian corridors to support the people of Afghanistan.<\/li>\n<li>Stop arms trade policies and the military industrial complex, which profits from the ongoing wars in Afghanistan and elsewhere the world.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h5><strong>Support from Kurdish women<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Previously, <em>The Canary<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanary.co\/uk\/analysis\/2021\/08\/28\/afghan-and-kurdish-women-revolutionaries-urge-joined-up-global-resistance\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> messages of defiance by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rawa.org\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">Revolutionary Association of Women in Afghanistan<\/a> (RAWA). There were also messages of support from a number of Kurdish women&#8217;s organisations, including the armed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanary.co\/topics\/ypj\"  rel=\"noopener\">YPJ<\/a> (women&#8217;s protection units).<\/p>\n<p>Now Kurdish women&#8217;s organisation <a href=\"http:\/\/eng.kongra-star.org\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">Kongra Star<\/a> is calling on all governments and the UN to refuse recognition of a Taliban government:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"VAdftHC4wAex8bNKOgLKqFSeIzhPZDRMmj5LOCbPpHxE4zsMXIu7UYJfswqE2Vu01N659RX18kWjDlkny7gcJB\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We urgently call upon governments, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UN?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@UN<\/a>  Security Council &amp; regional entities to: <\/p>\n<p>Refuse to recognize a Taliban government, which has no legitimacy, &amp; terrorizes the people of Afghanistan, women &amp; girls in particular <img src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/13.0.1\/72x72\/1f447.png\" alt=\"?\" class=\"wp-smiley\" style=\"height: 1em; max-height: 1em;\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/StandWithWomenofAfghanistan?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#StandWithWomenofAfghanistan<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/No2TalibanYes2WomensRights?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#No2TalibanYes2WomensRights<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ouM7g2x4JT\">pic.twitter.com\/ouM7g2x4JT<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Kongra Star Women&#39;s Movement Rojava (@starrcongress) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/starrcongress\/status\/1433040262654275586?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 1, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/span><\/p>\n<h5>Turkey assisting ISIS<\/h5>\n<p>The Kurds of northern Syria have been at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ypgrojava.org\/The-Rojava-Revoultion-is-the-revolution-of-all-the-peoples-of-the-world\"  rel=\"noopener\">forefront<\/a> of the war against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanary.co\/topics\/daesh\"  rel=\"noopener\">Daesh<\/a> (ISIS). NATO member Turkey is at war with the Kurds and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanary.co\/topics\/yazidis\"  rel=\"noopener\">Yazidis<\/a> &#8211; a war which will likely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/opinion\/comment\/2021\/09\/05\/turkeys-fight-with-syrias-kurds-will-backfire-in-afghanistan\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">benefit<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/csis-website-prod.s3.amazonaws.com\/s3fs-public\/181113_IS-K_Backgrounder.pdf?LgtpuuPVxjdGU6g_idQlIH4cI1ILgZ0t\"  rel=\"noopener\">IS-Khorasan<\/a> (ISIS-K). IS-Khorasan is the organisation that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/is-k-claims-rocket-attack-on-kabul-airport-as-it-happened\/a-59022926\"  rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a> responsibility for the Kabul airport bombing. As one commentator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/opinion\/comment\/2021\/09\/05\/turkeys-fight-with-syrias-kurds-will-backfire-in-afghanistan\/\">observed<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Thus, the more Ankara erodes the ability of Kurdish and Yazidi militant groups to combat ISIS, the greater the chance Turkish forces could face ISIS-K attacks in Afghanistan, like the one that killed some 180 people at Kabul airport last month.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It now appears that Turkey, led by authoritarian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanary.co\/topics\/recep-tayyip-erdogan\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan<\/a>, is <a href=\"https:\/\/nordicmonitor.com\/2021\/08\/turkey-set-to-use-strategic-agreement-with-afghanistan-to-help-taliban-on-military-and-defense\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">working up a deal<\/a> to provide intelligence and military support to the Taliban. Indeed, on 18 August, Erdo\u011fan explained:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The main point is to reach an understanding with the Afghan authorities. For example, we can achieve this with a bilateral agreement like we did in Libya.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And in July, Erdo\u011fan admitted Turkey:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>has nothing against the Taliban\u2019s ideology, and since we aren\u2019t in conflict with the Taliban\u2019s beliefs, I believe we can better discuss and agree with them on issues.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h5><strong>&#8220;Let Us No Longer Mourn but Make the Enemy Weep!&#8221;<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>In a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rawa.org\/rawa\/2021\/03\/08\/let-us-no-longer-mourn-but-make-the-enemy-weep.html\"  rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> issued on 3 August, RAWA declared:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>we call for the establishment of a democratic front against the Taliban, we call upon all democratic, secular, anti-fundamentalist and anti-occupation forces, all our tormented women, girls and men, to say that nothing will come out of mourning.
