Lerma\/Coyotepec, Mexico\u00a0- In the San Lorenzo Huitzizilapan Otom\u00ed indigenous community, in the state of Mexico \u2013adjacent to the country\u2019s capital\u2013, access to water has been based on collective work.<\/p>\n

\u201cPublic services come from collective work. What we have done is based on tequio (free compulsory work in benefit of the community), cooperation. The community has always taken care of the forests and water,\u201d Aurora Allende, a member of the sector\u2019s Drinking Water System, told IPS.<\/p>\n

In San Lorenzo Huitzizilapan, a town of 18,000 people in the municipality of Lerma \u2013 about 60 kilometres west of Mexico City \u2013 some 10 autonomous community water management groups are responsible for the water supply in their areas.<\/p>\n

The first community system emerged in 1960 to meet local needs.<\/p>\n
