Important public spaces should be used for culture and leisure, not the promotion of warfare and destruction.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; CAAT (@CAATuk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CAATuk\/status\/1447864420688871426?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 12, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/span><\/p>\n<h5>&#8220;Festival of criminality&#8221;<\/h5>\n<p>AOC Europe &#8211; known as the Liverpool arms fair &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aoceurope.org\/welcome\">began<\/a> on 12 October. Some of the companies exhibiting at the fair include Elbit Systems, BAE Systems, and ELTA. Elbit is Israel&#8217;s largest arms producer and BAE makes parts for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/morningstaronline.co.uk\/article\/b\/gazan-children-remembered-at-arms-firm-gate\">fighter jets used in Israel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Palestine Action <a href=\"https:\/\/palestineaction.org\/liverpool-arms-occupied\/\">said<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>This event cannot be allowed to go ahead. Liverpool\u2019s residents don\u2019t want arms dealers and war criminals gathering in their city, and its presence is an insult to our Palestinian, Iraqi, Afghan citizens, and all others whose homelands have been devastated by the products of Raytheon, Elbit, ELTA, and the other despicable firms meeting in the ACC. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>After the council and event organisers failed to act, our activists have taken it upon themselves to uphold human rights by disrupting this festival of criminality.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span class=\"aCqatXuFTJRNrKrL2SvPymHIwUgIo4Md5Cf110FVU7blbhAGR8MyK0GppgnPdxsWE5i373wklJ9LqEBDhc2XjOWQznSoOzetZ\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Liverpool Arms Fair has been met with major protests on its first day. For example, BAE Systems, the UK&#8217;s biggest arms dealer,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/caat.org.uk\/data\/companies\/?nameSearch=bae%20systems\">sells weapons to<\/a> Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey and the UAE. <a href=\"https:\/\/caat.org.uk\/data\/companies\/bae-systems\/\">According<\/a> to CAAT:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>BAE\u2019s Typhoon and Tornado aircraft have been central to <a href=\"https:\/\/caat.org.uk\/homepage\/stop-arming-saudi-arabia\/\">Saudi Arabia\u2019s devastating attacks on Yemen<\/a> \u2013 attacks that have killed thousands and created a humanitarian disaster. Further Typhoon aircraft have been delivered to Saudi Arabia during the bombing and BAE and the UK government are pushing hard for a new contract.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Liverpool Against the Arms Fair <a href=\"https:\/\/caat.org.uk\/events\/stop-liverpool-arms-fair-no-business-as-usual\/\">stated<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>At the fair, arms merchants, whose weapons have been used to target civilian populations around the world, including in Palestine and Yemen, are due to market and sell their repressive products. Hosting the fair is a severe abrogation of the moral and ethical duties of the Council and is inimical to the values of the City.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The council has faced increasing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanary.co\/uk\/news\/2021\/08\/26\/liverpool-activists-dont-want-arms-dealers-in-their-city-heres-what-they-plan-to-do\/\">pressure<\/a> and protest over its decision to host the arms fair with the band Massive Attack <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2021\/sep\/10\/massive-attack-cancel-liverpool-gig-to-boycott-arms-fair-at-venue\">cancelling<\/a> a gig at the venue. The council didn&#8217;t listen.
