The fact that there are so few whistleblowers points to the failure of the system, particularly the failure of the oversight system.\u00a0 The press certainly hasn\u2019t been helpful.\u00a0 Chelsea Manning, who provided video evidence of war crimes, was dismissed by\u00a0Washington Post\u00a0oped writer Ruth Marcus as a \u201ccross-dressing Little Red Riding Hood.\u201d\u00a0 Edward Snowden, who provided fulsome evidence of illegal massive surveillance, was dismissed by\u00a0Post\u00a0senior writer David Ignatius as an \u201cintelligence defector,\u201d not a \u201cwhistleblower.\u201d\u00a0 NBC\u2019s David Gregory accused then\u00a0Guardian\u00a0reporter Glenn Greenwald of \u201caiding\u201d and \u201cabetting\u201d Snowden, and suggested he could be charged with a crime.\u00a0 So whistleblowers cannot count on support from the mainstream media.<\/p>\n
