{"id":4406,"date":"2021-01-01T18:47:04","date_gmt":"2021-01-01T18:47:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiofree.org\/?p=145417"},"modified":"2021-01-01T18:47:04","modified_gmt":"2021-01-01T18:47:04","slug":"iran-plans-to-increase-uranium-enrichment-to-up-to-20-percent-russias-envoy-to-iaea-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/radiofree.asia\/2021\/01\/01\/iran-plans-to-increase-uranium-enrichment-to-up-to-20-percent-russias-envoy-to-iaea-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran Plans To Increase Uranium Enrichment To Up To 20 Percent, Russia&#8217;s Envoy To IAEA Says"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img src=\"https:\/\/www.radiofree.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/5805196D-6194-4CD5-BC52-B575E9602CA8_w1200_r1.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"wsw\">\n<p>Iran has said it intends to enrich uranium to up to 20 percent purity, according to Russia&#8217;s ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).<\/p>\n<p>Mikhail Ulyanov said on Twitter on January 1 that IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi \u201creported to the (IAEA) Board of Governors &#8230; about intention of #Tehran to start enrichment op to 20%.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A Vienna-based diplomat confirmed there had been an IAEA report to member states that included Iran\u2019s intention, but declined to elaborate, according to Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>Iran currently enriches its uranium stockpile up to around 4.5 percent, which is above the 3.67 percent cap imposed by the 2015 nuclear deal but below the 90 percent purity considered weapons-grade.<\/p>\n<p>Iran has gradually reduced its compliance with the accord since the United States unilaterally withdrew from the deal in 2018 and started imposing crippling sanctions on Iran.<\/p>\n<p>The remaining parties to the deal said on December 21 they were preparing for a possible return of the United States to the accord after President-elect Joe Biden takes office on January 20.
