The past week has seen growing\u00a0protests\u00a0\u00a0against the contested presidency of Haiti\u2019s Jovenel Mo\u00efse. An unpopular figure who has ruled without a mandate, and, increasingly, by\u00a0decree\u00a0, Mo\u00efse\u00a0refused\u00a0\u00a0to relinquish power when his presidential term expired on February 7, 2021. While claiming that his term ends in February 2022, Mo\u00efse has lashed out against his political rivals,\u00a0arresting\u00a0\u00a0his critics, members of opposition political parties, and supreme court judges, all the while consolidating his draconian, some would say dictatorial, rule over Haiti.<\/p>\n
How Haiti arrived at this moment is predictable and unsurprising. Mo\u00efse\u2019s election was marred by\u00a0fraud\u00a0, extremely low voter turnout, and protests challenging his candidacy.<\/p>\n
