Independent Senator Bernie Sanders has said he will filibuster to delay an override on President Trump\u2019s veto of this year\u2019s $740 billion defense spending bill unless the Senate also holds a vote on the $2,000 checks. At least 12 Republicans would need to join with the Senate\u2019s 48 Democrats to reach the necessary 60 votes to approve the increased payments. Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz says Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is standing in the way of not just expanded stimulus payments, but a whole range of policies he has refused to bring to the floor of the Senate. \u201cWe think of ourselves as a democracy, but this one person has blocked the ability of the Senate to go on record of saying whether they\u2019re for or against a whole variety of measures that large numbers of Americans think are important,\u201d Stiglitz says.
