{"id":4739,"date":"2021-01-04T15:50:26","date_gmt":"2021-01-04T15:50:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiofree.org\/?p=145959"},"modified":"2021-01-04T15:50:26","modified_gmt":"2021-01-04T15:50:26","slug":"russia-ends-search-for-bodies-of-17-fisherman-in-arctic-ocean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/radiofree.asia\/2021\/01\/04\/russia-ends-search-for-bodies-of-17-fisherman-in-arctic-ocean\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia Ends Search For Bodies Of 17 Fisherman In Arctic Ocean"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img src=\"https:\/\/www.radiofree.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/eea6b1a0-3cfa-49e4-b75b-fe45f99da522_w1200_r1.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"wsw\">\n<p>Russian officials have stopped the search for the bodies of 17 fishermen who fell into the freezing waters of the Arctic Ocean when their trawler capsized during a storm a week ago.<\/p>\n<p>The Federal Agency for Maritime and River Transportation (Rosmorrechflot) said on January 4 that the search and rescue operations were stopped, adding that none of the bodies were found.<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"wsw__a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rferl.org\/a\/russia-fishing-boat-sinks-barents-sea\/31022327.html\">Onega vessel capsized on December 28, 2020, during a heavy storm,<\/a> and two of the 19 fishermen aboard were rescued at the time.<\/p>\n<p>On December 30, the remaining 17 missing men were officially presumed dead.<\/p>\n<p>It is not clear what exactly caused the vessel to capsize.<\/p>\n<p>Media reports said ice accumulation on the fishing boat carrying the Russian crew led to the sinking.<\/p>\n<p>The Investigative Committee has launched a probe into what it called &#8220;possible violation of exploitation of a vessel.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Russian-flagged vessel had reportedly been operating since 1979.<\/p>\n<p>Maritime accidents are not uncommon in Russia.<\/p>\n<p>In April 2015, a Russian trawler carrying 132 people sank off the Kamchatka Peninsula in the country\u2019s Far East.
