PETA Issues Survival Tips for Animals Ahead of Winter Storm Izzy"},"content":{"rendered":"<input class=\"fooboxshare_post_id\" type=\"hidden\" value=\"1021003\"\/><p>Because of winter storm Izzy,\u00a0<strong> PETA is sharing tips for keeping animals\u00a0safe.\u00a0<\/strong>They\u00a0are especially vulnerable in cold weather\u00a0and winter storms, which lead to multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/features\/animal-companions-winter-freeze-death\">deaths, injuries, and near-miss rescues<\/a> each year. (And most incidents aren\u2019t even reported.) A glimpse of just some of the dogs PETA\u2019s fieldworkers have found suffering in the cold can be seen <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/LTED4SYkzOs\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The following steps can go a long way toward helping animals survive throughout cold weather.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bring them indoors<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> Companion animals should always live indoors.\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Why-are-so-many-people-so-cruel-to-their-dogs-The-Washington-Post.pdf\">Backyard dogs<\/a>\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0\u201coutdoor cats\u201d\u2014like those featured in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakingthechainfilm.com\/\"><em>Breaking the Chain<\/em><\/a>, the documentary produced by Oscar winner Anjelica Huston\u2014often go without adequate food, water, shelter, and veterinary care. They are no better equipped to survive freezing temperatures or extreme weather conditions than\u00a0humans\u00a0are,\u00a0they\u00a0suffer terribly from frostbite, and\u00a0they\u00a0can die of exposure.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gear\u00a0<\/strong><strong>up: <\/strong>Coats will keep dogs comfortablein cold weather, secure harnesses can help prevent them\u00a0from\u00a0getting loose on walks, and booties will protect their sensitive paw pads from\u00a0the\u00a0frozen ground. Keep walks short in cold weather, especially for shorthaired dogs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don<\/strong><strong>\u2019t forget birds:<\/strong> During\u00a0extreme winter weather,\u00a0provide birds and other wild animals with access to an emergency water supply by filling a heavy\u202fnonmetal\u202fwater bowl (tongues can freeze to metal) and breaking the surface ice at least twice a day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Good Samaritans who see companion animals kept chained or penned outside 24\/7 or without adequate shelter from the elements\u00a0<strong>should note the\u00a0animals\u2019\u00a0exact\u00a0location\u00a0and alert local law-enforcement authorities immediately<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>Anyone who leaves animals outside to suffer in severe weather\u00a0may be prosecuted.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>PETA has released this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/media\/psa\/make-dogs-dreams-come-true\/\"><strong>cold-weather public service announcement<\/strong><\/a>.
