{"id":5330,"date":"2020-06-09T16:54:53","date_gmt":"2020-06-09T16:54:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/weblog.uhrp.org\/?p=897"},"modified":"2020-06-09T16:54:53","modified_gmt":"2020-06-09T16:54:53","slug":"what-is-in-the-uyghur-forced-labor-prevention-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/radiofree.asia\/2020\/06\/09\/what-is-in-the-uyghur-forced-labor-prevention-act\/","title":{"rendered":"What is in the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blog post by Omer Kanat, UHRP Executive Director&#8211; 2 min read<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March, UHRP <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/uhrp.org\/press-release\/uhrp-thanks-senator-rubio-and-rep-mcgovern-uyghur-forced-labor-prevention-act-2020\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thanked<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Senator Rubio (R) and Representative McGovern (D) for introducing the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act in the Sen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ate (<\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/116th-congress\/senate-bill\/3471\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">S.3471<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and the House (<\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/116th-congress\/house-bill\/6210\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H.R.6210<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). A<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s I said then, for companies to continue business as usual would be a green light for China\u2019s atrocities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UHRP strongly endorses this legislation and calls on governments around the world to apply joint pressure on the Chinese government to end its human-rights crimes against Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.gov\/general\/contact_information\/senators_cfm.cfm\">Contact your Senators<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>to urge them to co-sponsor S.3471<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ziplook.house.gov\/htbin\/findrep_house\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Contact your Representative<\/span>\u00a0<\/a>to urge co-sponsoring H.R. 6210<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Key provisions of the Act are outlined in a one-page summary <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.uhrp.org\/pdf\/UyghurForcedLaborPreventionAct.pdf\">here<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A finding that there is a &#8220;very high risk&#8221; that many factories and other suppliers in East Turkistan are exploiting forced labor, and that corporate \u201cdue diligence\u201d regarding supply chains is not possible due to mass surveillance, pervasive police presence, and harsh intimidation of workers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A shift in the burden of proof for companies, in order to comply with U.S. laws prohibiting the import of forced labor goods. The legislation would create a \u201crebuttable presumption\u201d that goods produced in East Turkistan are made with forced labor.
