{"id":53429,"date":"2021-02-25T11:16:39","date_gmt":"2021-02-25T11:16:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecanary.co\/?p=768346"},"modified":"2021-02-25T11:16:39","modified_gmt":"2021-02-25T11:16:39","slug":"face-coverings-in-secondary-schools-will-not-be-compulsory-says-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/radiofree.asia\/2021\/02\/25\/face-coverings-in-secondary-schools-will-not-be-compulsory-says-minister\/","title":{"rendered":"Face coverings in secondary schools will not be compulsory, says minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Face coverings and asymptomatic coronavirus (Covid-19) tests in secondary schools will not be compulsory when pupils in England return to class next month, the schools minister has confirmed.<\/p>\n<h5>Not compulsory<\/h5>\n<p>Nick Gibb acknowledged that it&#8217;s \u201cmore challenging\u201d to teach with face masks, but he said wearing face coverings is \u201chighly recommended\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He appealed to parents to allow their secondary school-age children to take part in regular voluntary rapid coronavirus tests when classrooms reopen from March 8.<\/p>\n<p><!-- EMBED START PA Quote --><\/p>\n<figure><script async src=\"https:\/\/content-embed.pressassociation.com\/embeds.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/figure>\n<p><!-- EMBED END PA Quote --><\/p>\n<p>He told <em>Times Radio<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Of course we can\u2019t make it mandatory on parents but we just hope that most parents will see the wisdom of testing their children twice a week.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Over the first two weeks of term, secondary school and college pupils will be asked to take three coronavirus tests on site and one at home. They will then be sent home-testing kits to do twice-weekly.<\/p>\n<p>Asked whether it should be a case of \u201cno test, no school\u201d, Gibb told <em>LBC radio<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>No, we want to make sure it is not compulsory in that sense, and they will need the permission of the parents.<\/p>\n<p>In all these things, it is a balance of risk and just having anybody tested, frankly, and identifying asymptomatic cases is a bonus in terms of minimising the risk.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He said he hopes the vast majority of students will volunteer to use the lateral flow tests.<\/p>\n<h5>Primary schools<\/h5>\n<p>Primary school children will not need to take a rapid coronavirus test when they return to class.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ajJE95UeEZCKYtMltghqRLeOabwUNYMFwvrKPZffuA8XygcO12pJx7IGdymBXQlzLhVAco04T8Hmrbk0sT1DVz93x32DinI\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Pupils will return to schools and colleges from Monday 8 March \u2013 here&#39;s everything you need to know: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/TrX6Dv8iZQ\">https:\/\/t.co\/TrX6Dv8iZQ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash;
