Joe Biden has<\/u> told people close to him that he supports impeaching President Donald Trump, Rep. Cedric Richmond, D-La., has told members of Congress, according to congressional sources with knowledge of those conversations. Richmond is a senior adviser to Biden and was co-chair of the president-elect\u2019s campaign. He plans to resign later this month from Congress to join the new administration.<\/p>\n
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Friday the House would move to impeach the president if he did not \u201cimmediately\u201d resign. \u201cToday, following the president\u2019s dangerous and seditious acts, Republicans in Congress need to follow that example and call on Trump to depart his office \u2014 immediately,\u201d she wrote in a letter <\/a>to her colleagues. \u201cIf the president does not leave office imminently and willingly, the Congress will proceed with our action.\u201d CNN reported that Democrats will introduce <\/a>an article of impeachment for \u201cincitement of insurrection\u201d on Monday.<\/p>\n Biden was asked after Pelosi\u2019s announcement whether he supports Trump\u2019s impeachment at a press conference Friday afternoon. \u201cI\u2019ve thought for a long, long time that President Trump wasn\u2019t fit to hold the job. That\u2019s why I ran,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat the Congress decides to do is for them to decide.\u201d Asked for comment on Richmond\u2019s conversations, a Biden spokesperson referred The Intercept to Biden\u2019s public comment deferring to Congress.<\/p>\n Members of Congress, said Jennifer Stewart, a lobbyist and former congressional staffer who is close with Richmond, are misrepresenting what Richmond has been saying. \u201cCedric is addressing impeachment as a Member of Congress representing his district only,\u201d she said. \u201cCedric has not made a comment about Biden\u2019s position and he has not had one conversation with Biden about impeachment.\u201d A request for comment left with Richmond\u2019s office was not returned.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
