The 1998 Human Rights Act, an outstanding legal achievement, is being taken apart simply to empower the government<\/p>
After years of threats and Conservative manifesto commitments, it looks like a British \u201cbill of rights\u201d<\/a> to scrap and replace the 1998 Human Rights Act is finally upon us. \u201cMy ministers,\u201d read the Prince of Wales<\/a> in his mother\u2019s place on Tuesday, \u201cwill restore the balance of power between the legislature and the courts.\u201d<\/p> But scratch the surface and you find this bill of rights to be precisely the opposite \u2013 not a document to empower ordinary people in post-Brexit Britain, but a power grab by the state. Remember, this is the prime minister who once illegally shut down parliament<\/a> for irritating his political agenda \u2013 for the No 10 Praetorian Guard, \u201clegislature\u201d is euphemism for the \u201cexecutive\u201d.<\/p> Shami Chakrabarti was shadow attorney general for England and Wales from 2016 to 2020, and was director of Liberty from 2003 to 2016
