Dozens of activists were detained on January 10 in at least three of Kazakhstan’s main cities, including the capital, Nur-Sultan, amid local and parliamentary elections. Protesters rallied in the country’s largest city, Almaty, calling for a boycott of the vote and denouncing authoritarian ex-President Nursultan Nazarbaev’s Nur Otan, the ruling party since 1999.<\/p>\n\n
