This comes as others are either actively taking industrial action or balloting members for it. However, once again Keir Starmer&#8217;s Labour Party has made its position clear &#8211; it&#8217;s not the party of industrial action. So, it&#8217;s time for unions to ditch the party for good.<\/p>\n<h2>Strikes across the UK<\/h2>\n<p>At the minute, several unions are striking. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanary.co\/trending\/2022\/06\/21\/the-sunday-times-changed-an-article-backing-up-the-rmt-strike\/\"  rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) union<\/span><\/a> &#8211; over pay, terms and conditions.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bywire.news\/articles\/barristers-have-voted-to-take-strike-action-against-dominic-raab\"  rel=\"noopener\">The Criminal Bar Association (CBA)<\/a> &#8211; over the government&#8217;s decimation of legal aid.<\/li>\n<li>United Voices of the World (UVW) union members at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdfunder.co.uk\/p\/suport-pub-workers-in-brighton-strike\"  rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Saint James Tavern<\/span><\/a> in Brighton &#8211; striking over pay and conditions.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.workersliberty.org\/story\/2022-05-25\/couriers-organise-long-haul\"  rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">IWGB courier members working for Stuart Delivery<\/span><\/a>, who contract for Just Eat &#8211; again, over pay and conditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other unions are currently balloting, or have balloted, members on strike action. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucu.org.uk\/RespectFE\"  rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The University and College Union (UCU)<\/span><\/a>&#8216;s further education members &#8211; over pay and conditions.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitetheunion.org\/news-events\/news\/2022\/june\/british-airways-facing-summer-turmoil-as-check-in-staff-vote-overwhelmingly-for-strikes-over-pay\/\"  rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">British Airways<\/span><\/a> check-in staff division of Unite, who voted overwhelmingly to strike.<\/li>\n<li>IWGB members at the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IWGBunion\/status\/1538798888047595520\"  rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine<\/span><\/a>, who also voted overwhelmingly to strike.<\/li>\n<li>The Communication Workers Union (CWU), which is balloting both its <a href=\"https:\/\/bywire.news\/articles\/bt-is-facing-a-historic-strike-by-workers-over-insulting-pay-offer\"  rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">BT<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bywire.news\/articles\/a-second-strike-from-the-cwu-could-be-on-the-cards\"  rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Royal Mail<\/span><\/a> staff.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On top of all this, several other unions are making noise about potential strike action. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbu.org.uk\/news\/2022\/06\/27\/firefighters-2-pay-offer-utterly-inadequate\"  rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Fire Brigades Union (FBU),<\/span><\/a> whose bosses have just offered an &#8220;utterly inadequate&#8221; 2% pay rise to members.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2022\/jun\/27\/uk-doctors-demand-pay-rise-of-up-to-30-over-five-years\"  rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The British Medical Association (BMA)<\/span><\/a>, which is demanding a 30% pay rise for doctors over five years to make up for pay cuts since 2008.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is perhaps looking set to be the largest-scale series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bigissue.com\/news\/employment\/will-there-be-a-national-strike\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">strikes since 2011<\/a>. But will the alleged &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.disabilitynewsservice.com\/anger-as-starmer-says-labour-is-the-party-of-working-people\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">party of working people<\/a>&#8216;, Labour, support all these strikes? Probably not.<\/p>\n<h2>Labour: anti-trade unionism<\/h2>\n<p>So far, Keir Starmer has made it clear that his party doesn&#8217;t support the RMT strike. He even tried to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2022\/jun\/22\/labour-frontbenchers-who-joined-rail-strike-pickets-pressed-to-apologise-by-keir-starmer\"  rel=\"noopener\">stop his frontbenchers<\/a> going to picket lines. Then, on Tuesday 28 June, Labour&#8217;s shadow economic secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SaulStaniforth\/status\/1541684943264292864\"  rel=\"noopener\">Tulip Siddiq<\/a> was on <em>Sky News<\/em>. She said of the RMT action:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We didn&#8217;t support the strikes, as they happened now, because we felt they were very disruptive to the country.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Host Kay Burley also asked if <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SkyNews\/status\/1541687824612835330\"  rel=\"noopener\">Siddiq would support a BMA strike<\/a>. Siddiq said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I support a situation where we pay people properly.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yes, Siddiq really did say that. You&#8217;d be forgiven for thinking those words came out of a Tory&#8217;s mouth.<\/p>\n<h2>General strike now<\/h2>\n<p>If Labour was living up to its founding principles, then as a minimum it would support every strike. In an ideal world, it would be calling for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bigissue.com\/news\/employment\/will-there-be-a-national-strike\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">general (national) strike<\/a> &#8211; as some unions have already hinted at.<\/p>\n<p>Given the surge of ongoing and potential industrial action, unions would do well to call a general strike. If Labour won&#8217;t support it, or any other action, then so be it. Working-class people don&#8217;t need a Tory-lite party to be able to affect change.<\/p>\n<p>Power lies within the hands of the people. Now, the unions need to step up and bring the UK to a standstill &#8211; while ditching Labour at the same time.
