He alleged that in the last eight years, the opposition did not discuss farmers&#8217; suicide because farmers were not dying by suicide. Dubey stated in Hindi, \u201cDid the opposition ever have a single discussion about farmers&#8217; suicides in the last eight years? If they didn\u2019t,<\/span><b> it means farmers are not dying by suicide<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. We (BJP) have given so much power to farmers that today the farmers&#8217; are agitating. And what is the condition of the farmer? Modi&#8217;s government was in power for the whole year and the same amount of funds was provided to the farmers. And that\u2019s how we strengthened farmers enough to continue agitating for over a year, <\/span><b>but no farmer died by suicide<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"810\" height=\"456\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yqitVkQY2kE?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;%23038;showsearch=0&#038;%23038;showinfo=1&#038;%23038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;%23038;fs=1&#038;%23038;hl=en-GB&#038;%23038;autohide=2&#038;%23038;start=241&#038;%23038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4><b>Did no farmers die by suicide in the last eight years?<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alt News performed a Google search to investigate the statement made by MP Nishikant Dubey in the Lok Sabha. In October 2021, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ndtv.in\/india-news\/1-53-lakh-cases-of-suicide-in-the-country-in-2020-more-than-10-thousand-cases-related-to-agriculture-sector-2593111\"  rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NDTV India<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> published a report about farmers&#8217; suicide in 2020. Quoting a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1pxqJ_WE3RHfasBeiAT6ZlJ7txy1M9aEY\/view?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the article states that a total of 1,53,052 cases of suicide were reported in 2020. Out of these, a total of <strong>10,677<\/strong> cases of suicide were reported in the agriculture sector. Of which 5,579 suicides were of farmers and 5,098 suicides were of agricultural labourers. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is worth noting that these figures represent just 2020 alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In his statement, Dubey referred to the eight years under the rule of Narendra Modi, i.e. from 2014 to 2021. We examined the data from 2014 to 2020. (The data for 2021 is not yet available on the NCRB website.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A total of 1,31,666 people died by suicide <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1DkXWB-RsrbbmQNzs-dbBgYHZQwMrnkPd\/view?usp=sharing\"  rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in 2014<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. As per the data, <\/span><b>5,650<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> farmers died by suicide <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ncrb.gov.in\/sites\/default\/files\/chapter-2A%20farmer%20suicides.pdf\"  rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in 2014<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. There is not much of a difference between these <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1ENf4xQehKbM0PGn7P8iYOm2PfT4srhcQ\/view?usp=sharing\"  rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and the 2015 figures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ncrb.gov.in\/sites\/default\/files\/chapter-2A-suicides-in-farming-sector-2015_0.pdf\"  rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><b> 8,007<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> farmers took their own lives, out of a total of 1,33,623 deaths. The following year, a total of 1,31,008 people died by suicide. Of them, 8.7 per cent were involved in the agriculture sector. The report states that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/14e_DnN8Qcq5NIR80XZSTv7n9IBxWOlM2\/view?usp=sharing\"  rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in 2016<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, 11,379 people engaged in agriculture died by suicide, out of which <\/span><b>6,270<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> were farmers and 5,109 were agricultural labourers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/fact-check-bjp-mp-nishikant-dubey-said-no-farmers-suicide-in-8-years\/#gallery-124542-3-slideshow\">Click to view slideshow.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to NCRB data, a total of 1,29,887 cases of suicide were registered <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1zT22xv5pWtP1a9LzPtCy_lFhcSN9eun6\/view?usp=sharing\"  rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in 2017<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Of these, 8.2% were from the agriculture sector. 10,655 people employed in the agriculture sector had died by suicide, of which <\/span><b>5,955<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> were farmers and 4,700 were agricultural labourers. Similarly, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1GhCx2kzEcB7YYqms4c1jhjAl7knF0ZeZ\/view?usp=sharing\"  rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in 2018<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, out of a total of 1,34,516 suicide cases, 10,349 were related to the agriculture sector. This figure accounts for 7.7% of the total suicide cases. In other words, in 2018, <\/span><b>5,763<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> farmers and 4,586 agricultural labourers died by suicide. At the same time, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1Emr8lImlX-ZyjRbybZOmTXe-Unis-dRF\/view?usp=sharing\"  rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in 2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, 10,281 people working in the agricultural sector died by suicide, which accounts for 7.4% of the total figures. Of these, <\/span><b>5,957<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> were farmers and 4,324 were agricultural labourers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/fact-check-bjp-mp-nishikant-dubey-said-no-farmers-suicide-in-8-years\/#gallery-124542-4-slideshow\">Click to view slideshow.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aajtak.in\/agriculture\/agriculture-rural-news\/story\/ncrb-data-on-farmers-suicide-in-india-parliament-monsoon-session-agriculture-minister-on-farmers-suicide-lbsa-1299306-2021-07-28\"  rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Aaj Tak report dated July 28, 2021<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, contains data on farmers&#8217; suicide in each state of India from 2017 to 2019. According to this data, Maharashtra and Karnataka reported the highest number of farmers&#8217; suicides in the country. In Maharashtra, 2,426 farmers died by suicide in 2017, 2,239 in 2018 and 2,680 in 2019. On the other hand, in Karnataka, these figures are 1,157, 1,365 and 1,331 respectively. The same data can be found on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/data.gov.in\/search?title=2017%20to%202019%20farmer%27s%20suicide%20\"  rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">data.gov.in<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on farmers&#8217; suicides in different Indian states in 2018 and 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"no-wrap-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-124552\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.altnews.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/8.jpg?resize=660%2C879&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"879\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.altnews.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/8.jpg?w=660&amp;ssl=1 660w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.altnews.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/8.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To sum it up, according to NCRB data, between 2014 and 2020, <strong>78,303<\/strong> people involved in the agricultural sector died by suicide, of which <strong>43,181 were farmers<\/strong>. These figures clearly refute the claim made by Lok Sabha MP Nishikant Dubey.
