The U.S.-U.K. Extradition Treaty forbids extradition in the case of \u201cpolitical offences.\u201d Former Australian High Commissioner to the U.K. George Brandis \u2014 who was commissioner for almost the entirety of Assange\u2019s Belmarsh imprisonment since 2019 \u2014 doesn\u2019t agree that Assange is a political prisoner.<\/p>\n
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and its new Minister Penny Wong have consistently stated a view that the case is not political but purely\u00a0a legal matter:<\/p>\n
