Less than 100 days before the world\u2019s leaders meet in Egypt to tackle the climate crisis, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi\u2019s incendiary trip to Taiwan leaves climate cooperation between the U.S. and China in tatters.<\/p>\n
It was only last year, in 2021, that U.S. Climate Envoy John Kerry and China Special Envoy for Climate Change Xie Zhenhua issued a\u00a0joint statement\u00a0\u00a0to strengthen the Paris Agreement by adopting\u00a0 \u201clong-term strategies aimed at net zero GHG emissions\u201d to keep the world\u2019s temperature below 2 degrees Celsius, with the goal to\u00a0limit warming\u00a0to 1.5 degrees.<\/p>\n
Such collaboration is urgently needed if the world is to thwart rising sea levels, drought, famine and extreme weather \u2014 flash floods to suffocating heat waves \u2014 because China and the United States are the world\u2019s\u00a0largest carbon emitters, responsible for\u00a040 percent\u00a0of greenhouse gasses baking the earth.<\/p>\n
