His announcement comes ahead of Labour&#8217;s annual conference in Liverpool, a city renowned for its love of the Murdoch press. Not.<\/p>\n<p>The<em> Sun<\/em>&#8216;s reporting of the 1989 Hillsborough football disaster led to the newspaper being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goal.com\/en-gb\/news\/why-the-sun-is-hated-by-liverpool-fans-banned-in-many-places\/2hrhnj5tch2r1ae7tllvac6fb\">despised and boycotted<\/a> in the city. Following the disaster, in which 96 people died, the<em> Sun<\/em> made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanary.co\/uk\/2021\/04\/15\/you-will-never-walk-alone-the-hillsborough-disaster-remembered\/\">false claims<\/a>, including that fans pickpocketed the bodies of victims.<\/p>\n<h2>The Scum<\/h2>\n<p>Starmer, man of the people that he is, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-merseyside-58795961\">written for the <em>Sun<\/em><\/a> since becoming Labour leader. This was after making a big deal of his refusal to do so during his leadership campaign:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This city has been wounded by the media&#8230; and I certainly will not be giving an interview to The Sun during the course of this campaign.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It would be reasonable to think his new pledge would go down well in the Land of the Scousers. Hillsborough remains a cultural touchstone in the city. The legislation Starmer is proposing would, in theory, help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/incoming-labour-government-bring-hillsborough-25084325\">victims get justice<\/a> in cases where the state is liable.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"D3C2EIVTifRPZ4uFonOaqLzyepwhAcMm7Yr5jvKX8J1GB9gdH0xWkltNQ\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I know firsthand how vital it is we continue the legal fight for all those affected by the Hillsborough disaster.<\/p>\n<p>That&#39;s why one of my first acts as Prime Minister will be to introduce the Hillsborough Law.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/54MYs50zhk\">https:\/\/t.co\/54MYs50zhk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Keir Starmer (@Keir_Starmer) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Keir_Starmer\/status\/1573210750172160000?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 23, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Tory boy?<\/h2>\n<p>But it&#8217;s not that simple. Certainly, Liverpool votes Labour. But many people in the city quite understandably feel that writing for the paper which disparaged the Hillsborough victims is beyond the pale.<\/p>\n<p>And they aren&#8217;t afraid to say so. Now, days after he tweeted about &#8216;introducing the Hillsborough Law&#8217;, the paper seems to once again have a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hoffman_noa\/status\/1573975153247223809?s=20&amp;t=xpl0QXVJTtx1108aHT1bdA\">presence<\/a> at the conference in Liverpool. A stark change from 2016, when it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itv.com\/news\/2016-09-27\/the-sun-newspaper-banned-from-labour-party-conference-amid-hillsborough-controversy\">banned<\/a> from the party conference.<\/p>\n<h2>Red City?<\/h2>\n<p>Many people in British politics operate according to huge assumptions about Liverpool. For example, it&#8217;s enduring socialist mythology. There may be atoms of truth in that view, but it&#8217;s a far more complex place than many understand.<\/p>\n<p>One thing is true, though: <em>the Sun<\/em>, and those who write for it, will be given short thrift by a lot of local people. Their support shouldn&#8217;t be taken for granted.
