{"id":942381,"date":"2023-01-02T21:21:38","date_gmt":"2023-01-02T21:21:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/ben-gvir"},"modified":"2023-01-02T21:21:38","modified_gmt":"2023-01-02T21:21:38","slug":"israels-ben-gvir-postpones-visit-to-al-aqsa-amid-warnings-that-people-will-die","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/radiofree.asia\/2023\/01\/02\/israels-ben-gvir-postpones-visit-to-al-aqsa-amid-warnings-that-people-will-die\/","title":{"rendered":"Israel&#8217;s Ben-Gvir Postpones Visit to Al-Aqsa Amid Warnings That &#8216;People Will Die&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<img src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/itamar-gen-gvir.jpg?id=32619684&width=1245&height=700&coordinates=0%2C71%2C0%2C347\"\/><br\/><br\/><p>Israel's far-right national security minister on Monday postponed a planned visit Islam's third-holiest site amid warnings from the country's opposition leader and Palestinian officials that such a trip would have deadly consequences.<\/p><p><em>The Times of Israel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/ben-gvir-said-to-postpone-planned-temple-mount-visit-after-sitting-down-with-netanyahu\/\" ><\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/ben-gvir-said-to-postpone-planned-temple-mount-visit-after-sitting-down-with-netanyahu\/\">reports<\/a> Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir temporarily put off a promised visit to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem\u2014which sits on what Jews call the Temple Mount, Judaism's most sacred site since biblical times\u2014after speaking with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of the right-wing Likud party.<\/p><p>The previous day, Ben-Gvir  vowed to visit the contested site\u2014which has been illegally occupied by Israel for over half a century\u2014sometime this week, possibly as soon as Tuesday or Wednesday.<\/p><p>Yair Lapid, who stepped down as Israel's prime minister last week and now leads the opposition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/people-will-die-lapid-calls-on-netanyahu-to-prevent-ben-gvirs-temple-mount-visit\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" >said<\/a> Monday that \"Itamar Ben-Gvir must not go up to Temple Mount. It is a deliberate provocation that will put lives in danger and cost lives.\"<\/p><p>Lapid, of the liberal Yesh Atid party, added that Netanyahu must tell Ben-Gvir: \"'You are not going to the Temple Mount. People will die.'\"<\/p><blockquote class=\"rm-embed twitter-tweet\" data-partner=\"rebelmouse\" data-twitter-tweet-id=\"1609875284391759872\">\n<div style=\"margin:1em 0\">\\u201cBen Gvir's planned assault\/visit to Haram al Sharif is a deliberate provocation against Palestinian Muslims. Jews and others are allowed to visit during assigned  times and under strict restrictions. <\/p><p>Last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/04\/15\/israeli-forces-accused-barbaric-premeditated-attack-palestinian-worshipers\" >attacks<\/a> on the compound by Israeli <a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/israel-palestine-storm-al-aqsa-mosque-gaza-bombing\" >occupation forces and settler-colonists<\/a> wounded hundreds of Palestinians.  <\/p><p>Ben-Gvir\u2014who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/smotrich-at-knesset-ben-gurion-should-have-finished-the-job-thrown-out-arabs\/\" >believes<\/a> Isreal's founders \"didn't finish the job\" of ethnically cleansing all Arabs from Palestine\u2014has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.972mag.com\/edition\/temple-mount-status-quo\/\" >visited<\/a> Al-Aqsa several times while serving in the Knesset, Israel's parliament.
