{"id":955224,"date":"2023-01-12T23:04:36","date_gmt":"2023-01-12T23:04:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/asiapacificreport.nz\/?p=82845"},"modified":"2023-01-12T23:04:36","modified_gmt":"2023-01-12T23:04:36","slug":"jokowi-acknowledges-gross-human-rights-violations-in-indonesia-papua","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/radiofree.asia\/2023\/01\/12\/jokowi-acknowledges-gross-human-rights-violations-in-indonesia-papua\/","title":{"rendered":"Jokowi acknowledges gross human rights violations in Indonesia, Papua"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/\"><em>RNZ Pacific<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Indonesian President Joko Widodo has acknowledged &#8220;gross human rights violations&#8221; in his country&#8217;s history and vowed to prevent any repeat.<\/p>\n<p>He cited 12 &#8220;regrettable&#8221; events, including an anti-communist purge at the height of the Cold War.<\/p>\n<p>By some estimates, the massacres killed about 500,000 people.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/asiapacificreport.nz\/2023\/01\/13\/yamin-kogoya-arrest-of-papuan-governor-enembe-condemned-as-illegal-jakarta-kidnap\/\"><strong>READ MORE:<\/strong> Yamin Kogoya: Arrest of Papuan governor Enembe condemned as illegal Jakarta \u2018kidnap\u2019<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/asiapacificreport.nz\/?s=Indonesia+Papua+human+rights+violations\">Other Indonesian human rights violations reports<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_56306\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-56306\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-56306 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/asiapacificreport.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/President-Jokowi-Widodo-ThaiPBS-World-680wide-300x215.png\" alt=\"President Joko Widodo\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asiapacificreport.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/President-Jokowi-Widodo-ThaiPBS-World-680wide-300x215.png 300w, https:\/\/asiapacificreport.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/President-Jokowi-Widodo-ThaiPBS-World-680wide-586x420.png 586w, https:\/\/asiapacificreport.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/President-Jokowi-Widodo-ThaiPBS-World-680wide.png 680w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-56306\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">President Joko Widodo &#8230; &#8220;I strongly regret that those violations occurred.&#8221; Image: Thai PBS World<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Widodo is the second Indonesian president to publicly admit the 1960s bloodshed, after the late Abdurrahman Wahid&#8217;s public apology in 2000.<\/p>\n<p>The violence was unleashed after communists were accused of killing six generals in an attempted coup amid a struggle for power between the communists, the military and Islamist groups.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With a clear mind and an earnest heart, I as [Indonesia&#8217;s] head of state acknowledge that gross human rights violations did happen in many occurrences,&#8221; Widodo said at a news conference outside the presidential palace in Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And I strongly regret that those violations occurred,&#8221; added the president, more commonly known as Jokowi.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Democratic activists abducted<\/strong><br \/>\nThe events he cited took place between 1965 and 2003 and included the abduction of democratic activists during protests against former leader Suharto&#8217;s iron-fisted presidency in the late 1990s.<\/p>\n<p>The president also highlighted rights violations in the region of Papua &#8212; the eastern region bordering Papua New Guinea where there has been a long-running independence movement &#8212; as well as during an insurgency in the province of Aceh, in the north of the island of Sumatra.<\/p>\n<p>The government was looking to restore the rights of victims &#8220;fairly and wisely without negating judicial resolution&#8221;, he said, but did not specify how this would be done.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I will endeavour wholeheartedly to ensure gross human rights violations never happen again in the future,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>However, rights activists said his admission failed to address government responsibility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Call for legal action<\/strong><br \/>\nAmnesty International&#8217;s Indonesia executive director Usman Hamid called for legal action to be taken against the perpetrators of these acts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mere recognition without trying to bring to justice those responsible for past human rights violations will only add salt to the wounds of the victims and their families.
