Shell’s net profit surged to a record $42.3b in 2022, the British energy firm revealed on 2 January. The post-tax figure was more than double that of 2021, according to the group’s earnings statement.<\/p>\n

The oil giant’s revenue rocketed 45% to a dizzying $381b in 2022. The BBC<\/em> reported<\/a> that this was “double last year’s total and the highest in its 115-year history”.<\/p>\n

Colossal profits for energy companies have provoked public fury amid a cost-of-living crisis<\/a> fuelled by sky-high energy bills.<\/p>\n

Outrage<\/h2>\n

Critics and anti-capitalists expressed outrage at the level of profit going to CEOs and shareholders while normal people struggled.<\/p>\n

The Enough is Enough<\/a> campaign said the title of “greedy” belonged to executives rather than ordinary workers, many of whom have been striking for fair pay just this week<\/a> :<\/p>\n
