Ahead of Memorial Day weekend, PETA has erected a giant billboard near SeaWorld alerting people to the unrelenting suffering of the animals imprisoned there and urging them to avoid the place at all costs.
“Forcibly breeding and imprisoning marine mammals in cramped, barren tanks as SeaWorld does is abusive, not amusing,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is asking anyone with a heart to leave marine abusement parks out of their plans this holiday and every day.”
At SeaWorld, 140 dolphins are packed together into just seven small tanks, where they can’t escape attacks from other frustrated, aggressive dolphins. By contrast, in nature, bottlenose dolphins maintain dynamic relationships with large social networks, choose their own mates, and swim free in the ocean. Unwilling captive female dolphins are torn out of the water and sometimes drugged so that they can’t fight back while staff shove tubes filled with semen into their uteruses. Some animals have been repeatedly impregnated, only to lose their babies.
The billboard is located at 4445 W. Vine St., visible from FL-530 in Kissimmee.
