The Committee to Protect Journalists today joined 13 freedom of expression and digital rights organizations in a letter calling on members of the European Parliament to ensure that the proposed Digital Services Act protects freedom of expression.
The draft legislation, which is currently being reviewed, will become binding legislation for all EU member states once passed. The letter states that the Digital Services Act “offers an unparalleled opportunity to reinvigorate transparency, openness, and informational self-determination for Internet users.”
In the letter, the groups call for legislators to make sure the act guarantees free speech online, respects users’ private communication, and that content removal policies contain adequate timeframes to limit the over-removal of legitimate online content.
