On November 29, Jack Dorsey stepped down from his role as the CEO of Twitter and was replaced by Indian-origin Parag Agrawal.
Twitter handle @TruAmericanGal1 shared a screenshot of a tweet purportedly posted by the new Twitter CEO. The screenshot contains a photo of a man with an offensive caption.
In addition, another Twitter user amplified the image with the same claim, sharing a second photo as well. The user wrote that these were some old tweets posted by Agrawal wherein he has used racist and offensive language. @SinhaleseSavage’s tweet was liked by over 13,000 handles.
Fake tweets
Agarwal did not post any such tweets. If he had done so, they would have been the subject of widespread media scrutiny. But there are no reports to corroborate them. Furthermore, taking a closer look at the viral screenshots, we noticed that the date has been cropped out.
Replying to @TruAmericanGal1’s tweet, another user shared the original tweet which was morphed to create one of the fake tweets. The original tweet was posted by a handle called ‘@sandeep_bah’, as shown in the side-by-side comparison given below.
Moreover, Parag Agrawal is not the person featured in either of the two images.
Both the tweets also cannot be located on Agrawal’s Twitter timeline.
Therefore, fake tweets manufactured and shared in Parag Agrawal’s name were believed to be true.
