EGYPTAIR employees and passersby can expect a sonic shake-up on Wednesday, when PETA supporters assemble a crate that blasts audio recordings of crying, distressed monkeys in front of the airline’s D.C. office. The installment—which resembles the small wooden crates actually used by the airline to transport monkeys—is the latest in a PETA campaign urging EGYPTAIR to stop shipping monkeys from Cambodia and Mauritius to their deaths in U.S. laboratories.

When:      Wednesday, August 3, 12 noon

Where:    1730 Rhode Island Ave. N.W., Ste. 1015, Washington

Since March, the airline has reportedly flown as many as 5,000 monkeys into the country, posing a grave, potentially fatal public health risk and causing immense suffering to the animals, who are locked inside wooden crates and pitch-black cargo holds for days at a time. Last month, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the world’s most comprehensive information source on the global conservation of animals, elevated the threat to long-tailed macaques—the very monkey species being transported by EGYPTAIR—from “vulnerable” to “endangered.” These monkeys are now among the most endangered species on the planet. The IUCN has stated unequivocally that “the research industry needs to become accountable for the effects of [its] actions on wild non-human populations.” PETA notes that nearly every major airline in the world has stopped transporting monkeys to laboratories.

“Behind EGYTPAIR’s secret deals with the animal experimentation industry are monkeys who shriek and die in cargo holds and in laboratories,” says PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo. “PETA is calling on EGYPTAIR to stop ignoring these animals’ cries and ban laboratory-bound shipments as other airlines have done.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
