Rodeo Drive shoppers will be in for an eyeful on Wednesday, when a bodypainted PETA “crocodile” will lie in a pool of dirty water beneath a banner proclaiming, “Filthy Rich. Just Filthy. Hermès: Ban Exotic Skins,” outside the Hermès store. PETA exposés have revealed that alligators and crocodiles are confined to dank pools and crowded concrete pits before workers cut into their necks and ram metal rods down their spines or into their brains while they’re still alive, then peel off their skin.

“It takes two to three crocodiles who suffered in fetid pits to make just one handbag, and who wants to wear squalor and agony on their arm?” asks PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on Hermès to follow the lead of brands like Chanel, Calvin Klein, Burberry, Vivienne Westwood, and Victoria Beckham in ditching cruelly obtained exotic skins.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
