2.6 Relocation Mechanisms for HRDs: Mapping and Brainstorming Workshop

2nd November, 13:30 – 15:30 pm, Room: Anggerik 1&2

Background: Human rights defenders (HRDs) play an indispensable role in advocating for justice, equality, and human dignity. However, their courageous work often exposes them to various forms of danger, persecution, and threats to their physical security and well-being. Sometimes, this leads to a need for their relocation, either within or outside the country.

The main purpose of relocating HRDs is to provide them with a safe space to temporarily remove themselves from the context of their human rights work, allowing them an opportunity to secure safety as well as to take rest and respite to be able to sustain their crucial work.

Despite the strong need from HRDs who are facing different challenges, Asia has long lacked a systematic temporary relocation mechanism (TRM) for HRDs as compared to other regions. The primary objective of this session is to map out best practices and resources and to discuss ways forward for setting up and sustaining robust and diverse TRMs in Asia.

Objective

  • To map out and introduce relocation mechanisms for HRDs and best practices, with a focus on Asia.
  • To brainstorm ways forward to set up and sustain robust and diverse emergency and temporary relocation mechanisms in Asia.
