The Met Gala, one of fashion’s biggest and starriest events has rolled out its red carpet in New York for some of the planet’s best-known celebrities.

The Met Gala is typically held on the first Monday in May, but this year, the event was postponed due to Covid-19 and falls right in the middle of fashion month.

Kicking off this evening, 13 September, fashion’s biggest night will be held at its usual location: the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The gala will be in celebration of the Costume Institute’s newest exhibition, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” which opens to the public in the Anna Wintour Costume Center on 18 September, and the looks were inspired by everything from the Matrix film franchise to the Statue of Liberty.

The ball was co-hosted by pop star Billie Eilish, tennis player Naomi Osaka, actor Timothée Chalamet, and poet Amanda Gorman.

A court has sentenced the transgender woman, who led a militia called The White Rabbits, to 53 years in prison for bombing a Minnesota mosque in 2017, the Justice Department announced.

Emily Claire Hari, 50, was found guilty in December, after a five-week trial, on five federal charges related to the pipe bombing of the Dar-al-Farooq Islamic Centre in Bloomington, Minnesota, while worshipers were in the building for morning prayers. No one was hurt in the bombing.

“Emily Claire Hari, 50, formerly known as Michael Hari, was sentenced to life in prison for the Aug 5, 2017, bombing of the Dar al-Farooq (DAF) Islamic Centre in Bloomington, Minnesota”, the US Department of Justice said in a statement.

It said that Hari, who at the time identified as a man, Michael Hari, organized a “terrorist militia group” named The White Rabbits in Clarence, Illinois. Hari recruited two men, Michael McWhorter and Joe Morris, into the group, and on August 5, they attacked the Dar al-Farooq Islamic Center (DAF) in Bloomington, Minnesota, around 500 miles away.

In the early morning hours, as some people were gathering at the mosque for prayers, they broke a window and threw containers of volatile fuel and a pipe bomb inside, which exploded, causing heavy damage.

“Hari targeted DAF specifically to terrorize Muslims into believing they are not welcome in the United States and should leave the country,” the department said.

“Hari sought to terrorize an entire faith community. Today’s sentence makes clear that such acts of hate-fuelled terror will not be tolerated,” said Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco in a statement.

In January 2019, McWhorter and Morris pleaded guilty to the bombing, while Hari fought the case at trial. Hari’s two accomplices have not yet been sentenced.

According to BBC, iPhone owners should beware of picking up bad vibrations from powerful motorbikes, as they may damage camera systems, Apple has said.

The technology giant published a new support document warning iPhone users that the cameras on their devices can be damaged by exposure to certain vibrational frequencies such as those generated by high-power motorcycle engines.

Engine vibrations can harm phones’ optical-image stabilization or closed-loop autofocus systems, it says. Owners of scooters and mopeds should also use “vibration-dampening mounts”.

On social media, several users have said their phones have been damaged after being attached to a motorcycle.

The affected systems are designed to improve picture quality by counteracting movement, vibrations, and the effects of gravity. But high-power or high-volume motorcycle engines generate “intense high-amplitude vibrations”, the support page says, which can be transmitted through the frame and handlebars.

“Direct exposure to high-amplitude vibrations within certain frequency ranges may degrade the performance of these systems and lead to reduced image quality for photos and videos,” it says.

The solution is to refrain from attaching iPhones to the bike in the first place, something is commonly done for navigation.

According to Associated Press, students age 12 and older in the Los Angeles public school system soon must be vaccinated to attend classes on campus under one of the toughest anti-COVID mandates enacted in the nation.

The board of the Los Angeles Unified School District voted Thursday to require students age 12 and up to be fully vaccinated, with those who take part in sports and other extracurricular activities receiving both of two shots by the end of October and all others by Dec, 19.

Students who can’t show proof of vaccination won’t be permitted to have in-person learning following the end of winter break on Jan. 11 unless they have a medical or other exemption.

“This action is not about violating anybody’s rights,” school board member Monica Garcia said. “This action is about doing our job to be able to offer public schools that children can come to school and be safe.”

The nation’s second-largest school district was the largest in the U.S. to issue such a mandate. Nearby Culver City Unified School District imposed a similar policy last month for the 7,000-student district.

Los Angeles Unified, which has 630,000 students, has moved more aggressively than most districts in enacting COVID-19 safety measures. It tests all students and employees every week, requires masking indoors and outdoors, and has ordered employees to be vaccinated.

The district was among the last of the nation’s largest school districts to reopen to classroom instruction last spring. The teachers union opposed the move for months, citing health concerns. The union applauded the new mandate, which is sought after teachers were ordered to get the shots.

“COVID-19 is mutating, being transmitted to our students, and vaccines remain our community’s best line of defense to prevent the continued spread of disease,” said Cecily Myart-Cruz, president of United Teachers Los Angeles.

According to CNN, A powerful earthquake struck the southwest of Mexico late Tuesday, causing widespread shaking as far away as Mexico City and killing at least one person.

The United States Geological Survey said the 7.0 magnitude quake struck 2.5 miles east-northeast of Los Órganos de San Agustín, about eight miles from the Pacific Coast beach resort city of Acapulco. It was measured at an initial depth of 7.8 miles. At least 92 aftershocks were recorded, including one with a magnitude of 5.2, the Mexican State Civil Protection Secretariat said.

In Mexico City, alarms could be heard shortly before the ground started shaking. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration initially issued a tsunami warning, but it was later called off.
The lone fatality reported was a 19-year-old man named Eliodoro Hurtado, who died in the Mexican state of Guerrero.

Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said there were no initial reports of major damage in the capital, which is about 231 miles from the epicenter. In a post on social media, Sheinbaum said that many people had lost electricity and authorities were working to restore power. The city’s metro service said in a statement that train services had been resumed following a safety review.

Earthquakes are not uncommon in Mexico because of their location at the edge of the North American tectonic plate. Two major quakes struck the country in September 2017, and on September 19, 1985, a magnitude-8.0 temblor killed an estimated 9,500 people in and around Mexico City.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said there was no “significant damage” in Guerrero state, where Tuesday’s epicenter is located. While serious damage has not yet been reported from the epicenter, Lopez Obrador said authorities did receive reports of falling rocks.

According to Associated Press, Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed an elections overhaul into law Tuesday that adds more voting restrictions in the booming state, after Democrats spent months protesting what they say are efforts to weaken minority turnout and preserve the GOP’s eroding dominance. Abbott signed the sweeping changes during a ceremony in the East Texas city of Tyler.

“I feel extremely confident that when this law makes it through the litigation phase, it will be upheld,” Abbott said. “Because exactly what we’ve said, it does make it easier for people to be able to go vote. No one who is eligible to vote will be denied the opportunity to vote.”

Texas is among at least 18 states that have enacted new voting restrictions since the 2020 election, according to the Brennan Center for Justice. The laws are part of a national GOP campaign, including in Florida, Georgia, and Arizona, to tighten voting laws in the name of security, partly driven by Trump’s false claims that the election was stolen.

Opponents did not wait for Abbott’s signature to begin filing lawsuits against the new Texas law known as Senate Bill 1. The American Civil Liberties Union, minority rights groups, and disability advocates are part of a broad coalition that filed separate lawsuits last week in federal court in Texas, accusing Republican lawmakers of violating the federal Voting Rights Act and intentionally discriminating against minorities.

September 6, is celebrated as Labor Day in the United States, and millions of jobless people across the country have been deprived of Unemployment Benefits.

According to AP, millions of jobless Americans lost their unemployment benefits on Monday, leaving only a handful of economic support programs for those who are still being hit financially by the year-and-a-half-old coronavirus pandemic.

Two critical programs expired on Monday. One provided jobless aid to self-employed and gig workers and another provided benefits to those who have been unemployed for more than six months. Further, the Biden administration’s $300 weekly supplemental unemployment benefit also ran out on Monday. It’s estimated that roughly 8.9 million Americans will lose all or some of these benefits.

While the White House has encouraged states to keep paying the $300 weekly benefit by using money from the stimulus bills, no states have opted to do so. Many states even opted out of the federal program early after some businesses complained that they couldn’t find enough people to hire.

The ending of these programs comes as the U.S. economy has recovered from the pandemic, but with substantial gaps in the recovery. The Labor Department says there are still 5.7 million fewer jobs than before the pandemic.

Americans still financially struggling in the pandemic will find a smaller patchwork of social support programs, both at the state level and through the federal government.

Those unemployed less than six months will still be able to collect their benefits, but the amount will fall back to the level that each state pays. The average weekly check is roughly $387, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, but varies greatly state by state.
