A complaint has filed with police by Hindu hardline group against Twitter’s India region head after politically sensitive regions were depicted outside a map of India on its website, kickstarting an investigation in a fresh probe for the U.S. tech firm.

A map on Twitter’s careers page showed that Jammu and Kashmir region, claimed by both India and Pakistan, as well as the Buddhist enclave of Ladakh outside India. That provoked an outcry on social media this week that comes amid strained relations between Twitter and New Delhi over the firm’s compliance with India’s new IT rules.

The complaint accuses Twitter’s India head, Manish Maheshwari and another company executive of breaching the country’s IT rules as well as laws designed to prevent enmity and hatred between classes.

“This has hurt my sentiments and those of the people of India,” Praveen Bhati, a leader of the group Bajrang Dal in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, said in the complaint which was reviewed by news agency. He also called it an act of treason.

Twitter did not respond to a request for comment. As of Tuesday, the map was no longer visible on its site. Maheshwari was only this month summoned by police in Uttar Pradesh for failing to stop the spread of a video that allegedly incited religious discord. Maheshwari has won relief from a court in that case.

India’s technology minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has criticized Twitter for its failure to abide by new Indian rules and for denying him access to his Twitter account.

A senior government official has previously told news agency that Twitter may no longer be eligible to seek liability exemptions as an intermediary or the host of user content in India due to its failure to comply with the new IT rules. Activists say, however, it is a matter for the courts to decide.

Last year, the head of an Indian parliamentary panel accused Twitter of disrespecting New Delhi’s sovereignty, after mapping data showed Indian-ruled territory as part of China in what the social media firm said was a quickly resolved mistake.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday insisted that the EU should be able to talk to Russian leader Vladimir Putin, after other leaders from the bloc thwarted her push for a summit.

“The president of the US met for a serious talk with Vladimir Putin, which I did not have the impression was a reward for the Russian president,” Merkel told a press conference after EU talks in Brussels.

“A sovereign EU, in my opinion, should also be able to represent the interests of the EU in such a similar conversation.”

Germany and France rattled wary EU counterparts especially those neighboring Russia with a proposal to restart talks between Putin and the bloc, frozen since Moscow annexed Crimea in 2014.

Leaders rejected the push during hours of late-night wrangling in Brussels, with opponents arguing it risked sending the wrong message to Putin in the face of ongoing aggression from Moscow.

“We believe that it is far too premature and that now it would be a kind of reward for Russia’s President, for his politics, but unfortunately aggressive policy, provoking neighbors, attacks of various kinds,” Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said.

Italy’s Mario Draghi, who backed a meeting between all EU leaders and Putin, said that the proposal had come “a bit as a surprise” and upset the countries most worried about Moscow.

He said that the bloc had “substantially shelved this idea, at least for the moment”.

The Kremlin said it “regretted” the decision by the EU to reject talks and insisted that Putin “remains interested in establishing working relations between Moscow and Brussels”.

India on Tuesday declared a new coronavirus variant to be of concern, and said nearly two dozen cases had been detected in three states.

The variant, identified locally as “Delta plus”, was found in 16 cases in the state of Maharashtra, Federal Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan told in a news conference.

According to ministry, Delta plus showed increased transmissibility and advised states to increase testing.

On Monday, India vaccinated a record 8.6 million people as it began offering free shots to all adults, but experts doubted it could maintain that pace.

“This is clearly not sustainable,” Chandrakant Lahariya, an expert in public policy and health systems, told news agency.

“With such one-day drives, many states have consumed most of their current vaccine stocks, which will affect the vaccination in days to follow.”

With the currently projected vaccine supply for the next few months, the maximum daily achievable rate is 4 to 5 million doses, Lahariya added.

The effort has so far covered about 5.5% of the 950 million people eligible, even though India is the world’s largest vaccine producer.

A devastating second wave during April and May overwhelmed health services, killing hundreds of thousands. Images of funeral pyres blazing in car parks raised questions over the chaotic vaccine rollout.

Since May, vaccinations have averaged fewer than 3 million doses a day, far less than the 10 million health officials say are crucial to protect the millions vulnerable to new surges.

The US on Tuesday seized dozens of websites used by the Iranian web news publishers for “violation of sanctions.”

“Today, pursuant to court orders, the United States seized 33 websites used by the Iranian Islamic Radio and Television Union (IRTVU) and three websites operated by Kata’ib Hizbullah (KH), in violation of US sanctions,” said the Justice Department in a statement.

The websites of the Iranian state-owned news channel Press TV and Al-Alam were among those being blocked, while both are running again later in the day by using Iranian domains.

The move came one day after Iran’s President-elect Ebrahim Raisi urged the US to lift “all unjust sanctions” against Iran and ruled out a meeting with President Joe Biden.

Washington and Tehran have had indirect negotiations in Austria’s capital Vienna since April aimed at restoring the Iran nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The two sides remain divided over the issue after six rounds of talks.

The US government withdrew from the JCPOA in May 2018 and unilaterally re-imposed sanctions on Iran. In response, Iran gradually suspended parts of its JCPOA commitments from May 2019.
