  • Damascus, Syria,

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his wife Asma have tested positive for Covid-19 after experiencing mild symptoms, the presidency said Monday.

“After experiencing mild symptoms that resemble Covid-19, President al-Assad and first lady Asma Al-Assad took a PCR test, and the result showed that they are infected with the virus,” according to presidency statement.

“They are in good health and their condition is stable,” it said, adding that the couple will quarantine for up to three weeks.

Assad is 55 and his wife is 10 years his junior. Their positive test results came more than a week after Syria started vaccinating frontline health workers using jabs delivered from an unidentified “friendly state”.

The government has recorded 15,981 cases of Covid-19, including 1,063 deaths in government-held areas. In the Kurdish-held northeast, the Kurdish administration has announced a total 8,689 cases and 368 deaths. In rebel-held northwest Syria, opposition officials have reported 21,209 cases, including 632 deaths.

Members of the government are set to receive jabs as part of the World Health Organization’s Covax initiative by the end of this month. The WHO, the UN children’s agency UNICEF and the Gavi vaccine alliance, said they would help Syria get jabs to cover initially at least three percent of an estimated 20-million-strong population, and aim for 20 percent by the end of the year.

Syria has also authorized the use of Russia’s Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine, according to its embassy in Moscow.

The conflict in Syria since 2011 has killed more than 387,000 people and ravaged a healthcare sector struggling to cope with a mass outflux of professionals.

The health ministry this month warned of a surge in infections, urging compliance with coronavirus measures.

Since the start of the coronavirus outbreak last year, Damascus has struggled to enforce strict restrictions because of a stringent economic crisis compounded by a devaluation of the local currency on the black market.

Markets and public transport have maintained their usual bustle despite the pandemic, with many even foregoing face masks.

President Joe Biden on Monday announced the nomination of two women to lead US military commands, who will be only the second and third women to hold such senior military positions in the United States.

Three-star army general Laura Richardson was nominated to lead Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), which covers Central and Latin America. She will also receive her fourth star.

US Air Force General Jacqueline Van Ovost, the only woman to have reached the rank of four-star general, the military’s highest, was nominated to head Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM).

If the Senate confirms their nominations, then Van Ovost and Richardson will follow Lori Robinson, who was the first woman to helm a military command. She led Northern Command (NORTHCOM) before retirement in 2018.

“Each of these women have led careers demonstrating incomparable skill, integrity and duty to country,” Biden said while presenting the two generals during a short speech at the White House.

“Today is International Women’s Day, and we all need to see and to recognize the barrier-breaking accomplishments of these women,” he added.

The US military has 11 commands, all led by four-star generals.

Last month, local news papers of US reported that the Pentagon had decided on Van Ovost and Richardson’s nominations as early as last year.

But, according to news publishers, the announcement was delayed until after the November presidential election because former defense secretary Mark Esper feared then-president Donald Trump would not approve the generals’ nomination due to their gender.

  • Web desk,

International Women’s Day emerged in early 1900s at a time of great unrest, critical debates among women against oppression and inequality. In 1908, 15,000 women marched through NYC demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights. The next year, the Socialist Party of America observed the first National Woman’s Day across the US on February 28, 1909. Women continued to celebrate it on the last Sunday of February until 1913.

Simultaneously, in 1910, the second International Conference of Working Women was held in Denmark’s Copenhagen, where Clara Zetkin, who led the Women’s Office for the Social Democratic Party in Germany tabled the idea of an International Women’s Day. She proposed that every year, every country should celebrate on same day to press for their demands. The conference with over 100 women from 17 countries, representing unions, socialist parties, and working women’s clubs greeted Zetkin’s suggestion unanimously.

On March 9, 1911, International Women’s Day was honored for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. More than one million women and men attended the rallies campaigning for women’s rights to work, vote, be trained, to hold public office and end discrimination.

However, less than a week later, on March 25, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire took place in NYC where more than 140 women and girls died, most of them Italian and Jewish immigrants. One of the deadliest fires in the history of US, it drew significant attention to the working conditions and labor legislation in the country and became a focal point of the subsequent International Women’s Day events.

Meanwhile in Russia, on the eve of World War I, women observed their first International Women’s Day on February 23, the last Sunday in February, with a strike for “bread and peace” to protest the death of over two million Russian soldiers. While it was February 23 on the Julian calendar used then in Russia, according to the Gregorian calendar, it was March 8. Since then it has remained the global date for International Women’s Day as many women across Europe started protesting and raising their demands on that date.

In the UN, it was celebrated for the first time in 1975, and in December 1977, the General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming a UN Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace to be observed on any day of the year by the Member States in accordance with their historical and national traditions.

In 1996, the UN announced their first annual theme “Celebrating the Past, Planning for the Future”, followed by “Women at the Peace table” in 1997. In 1998 “Women and Human Rights”, in 1999 “World Free of Violence Against Women”, each year had a new theme. Campaign themes over the years have also included hash tags which are #ChooseToChallenge, #EachforEqual, #BalanceforBetter, #PressforProgress, #BeBoldforChange, #PledgeforParity, #MakeItHappen, #TheGenderAgenda and many more.

Tonight’s Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2021 match between Islamabad United and Quetta Gladiators has been rescheduled for Tuesday after Pakistani-Australian cricketer Fawad Ahmed tested positive for COVID-19.

Ahmed’s positive test was confirmed on Twitter by his franchise Islamabad United.

The PCB said the teammates of the positive player have been re-tested and their results have come out negative.

According to PCB protocol, Ahmed will remain in isolation until he returns two negative results in 10 days’ time.

Tonight’s match was originally scheduled to take place at 7pm. It was first rescheduled for 9pm but has since been called off entirely and will now take place tomorrow.

To avoid the outbreak of virus during PSL 2021, the Pakistan Cricket Board had created a bio-secure bubble and made it mandatory for every participating player to clear multiple rounds of Covid-19 testing.

However, there had been an instance of bubble breach last week when Peshawar Zalmi head coach Darren Sammy and captain Wahab Riaz had unknowingly met team owner Javed Afridi, who was not a part of the bubble.

The duo were quarantined briefly before being reinstated amid alleged threats of boycott by the franchise – something that the PCB denies.

Elderly people are being given priority in vaccinating citizens in the UK, while some are demanding priority on the basis of occupation.

The UK’s Vaccine Advisory Committee has said that vaccines should be given to citizens not on the basis of their profession but on the basis of their age, while the police and teachers want to be vaccinated on the basis of their profession.

Leading scientist Professor Wei Shen lin says the current vaccine delivery system is better and has no complications, and that’s why it’s working so fast. The first dose of vaccine was being provided to the citizens in a proper manner and the same arrangement should be kept in view in the second phase as well, he added.

There is no precedent in the UK for such a large number of vaccinations to be given professionally and there is a risk of complications from the professional vaccination delivery system.
