  • Kremlin,

The Kremlin on Friday slammed Joe Biden’s “very aggressive rhetoric” after the new US president said Washington’s relationship with Moscow would change and demanded opposition politician Alexei Navalny’s release.

“We’ve already said that we will not heed patronising statements of this sort. We will not do it,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

“This is very aggressive and unconstructive rhetoric.”

President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman acknowledged a “huge amount of differences and different approaches to key issues” but he also indicated that Moscow wanted to continue cooperation with Washington under Biden.

“We expect to see Americans’ political will to continue cooperation where this serves our interests,” he said.

In toughly worded remarks pivoting from his predecessor Donald Trump’s muted approach to Moscow, Biden on Thursday warned of “advancing authoritarianism” in China and Russia.

He said the United States would no longer be “rolling over in the face of Russia’s aggressive actions” and demanded the release of Putin’s jailed critic Navalny who this week was sentenced to nearly three years in prison on old embezzlement charges.

Biden said there were areas where he was willing to work with the Kremlin, notably the New START treaty on curbing nuclear weapons, which the two countries extended for five years this week.

Pakistani mountaineer Muhammad Ali Sadpara confirmed on Friday that Bulgarian climber Atanas Skatov has fallen and died, news outlets reported.

Atanas Skatov was part of the Sadpara team trying to summit the peak in tough winter conditions. Earlier, Ali Saltoro of Alpine Adventure Guides in Pakistan reported that Atanas Skatov has fallen while descending from Camp 3 when a fixed rope snapped.

According to Bulgarian media, a rescue helicopter has been requested. Atanas Skatov, from Bulgaria, was climbing with Dendi Sherpa. They climbed from Base Camp to Camp 2 on Wednesday and moved to Camp 3 yesterday.

After two weeks of wind and storms, state of the fixed ropes has been a concern among climbers. Colin O’Brady reported that some sections of the rope below Camp 3 had been buried by snow and that climbers (on their way up) had proceeded without clipping to them. In addition, there are plenty of dangerous old ropes along the Abruzzi Spur route.

As for the summit group, John Snorri’s wife, Lina Moey, said that there has been no connection since he left Camp 3 roughly 12 hours ago. However, this isn’t unexpected. “His plan was to call me when he reached the summit and I am hoping that plan will stick,” she said.

  • Kotli, Azad Kashmir,

When the Kashmiris will get the right to self-determination, Pakistan will offer Kashmiris either to accede to Pakistan or remain independent, announced Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday, media broadcasters reported

Addressing a rally to mark the Kashmir Solidarity Day in Kotli, Imran Khan said the United Nations has miserably failed to honor its commitment made to the people of Kashmiris.

The prime minister said he would raise voice for the Kashmiris at all forums. He, however, offered India that Pakistan was ready to take two steps forward if it implemented UN resolutions on the Kashmir issue. “But please do not misconstrue our desire for peace as our weakness,” PM Imran Khan told India.

He said categorically that Pakistan had nothing to do with the Pulwama attack. “Modi abolished the special status of the state of Kashmir only to win elections. We extended an olive branch to India, but it spurned our offer,” he regretted.

He said it was unfortunate that the United Nations had not fulfilled the promise it had made to the Kashmiris. “It has failed to get its resolutions on the Kashmir issue implemented,” he regretted.

The prime minister assured the Kashmiris that the entire Pakistani nation stood by them. “In fact, the entire Muslim Ummah is with you. And even non-Muslims are with you,” he added.

He told the gathering that he talked to former US president Donald Trump thrice on the Kashmir issue. PM Imran made it clear to India it could not succeed against Kashmiris however high or mighty it may be.

The prime minister was of the view that India and the entire region suffered whenever adherents of RSS ideology came to power. “Today, minorities in India are going through hard times. Modi government is pitted against farmers,” he added.

Imran Khan said that India could never win over the resolute Kashmiri people by using force, as the implementation of UNSC resolution guaranteeing the right to self-determination was the only solution.

“World history tells that no powerful army could ever win over a population. When a nation stands united, they defeated even the powerful armies. The US, a superpower could not win in Vietnam. No superpower could win in Afghanistan. France could not win over the population in Algeria,” he said.

Reiterating his commitment to raising the Kashmiri’s voice across the world, the prime minister said that instead of suppressing the Kashmir people, Narendra Modi’s Hindutva ideology, on the contrary, would destroy the Indian society.

In a series of tweets posted on Friday, Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed the hope that the achievement of Kashmiris’ goal of self-determination was not far as the younger generation was taking the struggle forward with even greater resolve.

“Now, a younger generation of Kashmiris is taking the struggle forward with even greater resolve. To the Kashmiri people, my message is that your goal of self-determination is not far,” the prime minister said.

On the day, he reiterated that Pakistan stood united and resolute with the Kashmiris in their legitimate struggle for self-determination, which had been reaffirmed by the international community in numerous United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions.

He said over seven decades of Indian occupation and oppression had failed to weaken the Kashmiri people’s resolve to struggle for their right to self-determination.

“Pakistan will stand with you till you achieve your legitimate rights. Pakistan has always stood for peace in our region, but the onus of creating an enabling environment lies with India,” Imran Khan added.

He said if India demonstrated sincerity in seeking a just solution to the Kashmir issue, in accordance with the UNSC resolutions, Pakistan was ready to take two steps forward for peace. “But let no one mistake our desire for stability & peace as a sign of weakness,” he said.

He said rather, it was because of Pakistan’s strength and confidence as a nation that it was prepared to go the extra mile to ensure a just peace that fulfilled the legitimate aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

In a statement, military officials said the party that won the election would hand over power after a year of emergency. Earlier, the military arrested political leaders, including Prime minister Aung San Suu Kyi.

Earlier, a senior official from the party of Mynmar’s detained Aung Suu Kyi said that he had learned that her health was good and that she was not being moved from the location where she was being held after a coup against her government.

The whereabouts and condition of Myanmar’s elected leader have not been made public since she was detained in the capital Naypyidaw by the military during the coup on Monday.

“There is no plan to move Daw Aung San Su Kyi and Doctor Myo Aung. It’s learned that they are in good health,” said Kyi Toe, a member of the National League for Democracy’s central information committee in a social media post which also referred to one of her allies.

Phone lines to the capital Naypyitaw and the main commercial centre of Yangon were not reachable, and state TV went off air hours before parliament had been due to sit for the first time since the NLD’s landslide election win in November, viewed as a referendum on Suu Kyi’s fledgling democratic government.

Soldiers took up positions at city hall in Yangon and mobile internet data and phone services in the NLD stronghold were disrupted, residents said. Internet connectivity also had fallen dramatically, monitoring service NetBlocks said.

Suu Kyi, Myanmar President Win Myint and other NLD leaders had been “taken” in the early hours of the morning, NLD spokesman Myo Nyunt told news agency by phone.

Dispatch of the vaccine to all federating units has been ensured, said the NCOC in a statement today. It said Sindh and Baluchistan were sent the vaccine by air, presumably to reduce time and ensure cold chain storage temperature.

It was earlier reported that Sindh will receive 8,300 doses which will be transported to Karachi via a commercial flight.

A ceremony will be held at the Chief Minister House on Wednesday to kick-start the vaccination drive in Sindh, during which 41,500 healthcare workers will be vaccinated.

Meanwhile, the Balochistan government has asked the federal government to increase its quota of COVID-19 vaccines as 5,000 doses can not cater to the province’s requirement.

While talking to local broadcaster, the provincial government’s spokesperson Liaquat Shahwani said there are 22,000 healthcare workers in the province.
