To memorialize the cows killed or injured when a truck carrying 103 of these sentient beings overturned last Wednesday at the I-44 and I-244 split in West Tulsa, PETA plans to place a sky-high message near the crash site proclaiming, “See the Individual. Go Vegan.” An officer at the scene noted that 10 of the animals were “miserable from the wreck” and had to be killed on-site because of severe injuries. Dozens of others made a break for freedom and were rounded up from the highway, nearby backyards, and a golf course.

“Cows died in terror and agony as a result of this crash, while the survivors ran for their lives,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA’s memorial will encourage anyone disturbed by the thought of these brave animals suffering on the roadside or ending up under the slaughterhouse knife to go vegan.”

At the slaughterhouse, workers shoot cows in the head with captive-bolt guns, hang them up by one leg, and cut their throats—often while they’re still conscious. Each person who goes vegan saves the lives of nearly 200 cows, pigs, chickens, and other animals every year.

PETA notes that there were at least 76 crashes involving trucks carrying animals used for food last year.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
