2.9 Breaking Boundaries: Gender and Intersectionality in Human Rights Work
2nd November, 16:00 – 18:00 pm, Room: Kristal 1&2
Background: Women human rights defenders (WHRDs) and gender rights defenders of diverse gender identities and sexual orientations are on the front lines, fighting patriarchy and traditional gender norms. Breaking gender norms and stereotypes is not an easy task, and in many Asian countries merely speaking up on these issues can put one’s security and life at risk. Yet many WHRDs and gender rights defenders persistently fight for this cause.
The objective of this session is to delve deep into the gender-specific challenges and opportunities that defenders encounter in different contexts. Panel of established WHRDs and gender rights defenders will speak from their experiences and work and explore how gender identity and gender-based discrimination intersect with their human rights work. Through open dialogue, shared experiences and expert insights, this session also aims to shed light on the importance of gender-sensitive approaches within the HRD community.
Participants will gain a nuanced understanding of how gender dynamics shape human rights work, whether it’s addressing gender-based violence and discrimination, advocating for indigenous women’s rights on the ground, or championing LGBTIQ+ rights. By unpacking these issues, we can equip defenders with the knowledge and capacity to create more inclusive and effective strategies as well as an enabling environment for all.
Objectives
- To reflect from different WHRDs’ and gender rights defenders’ experiences in conducting human rights work, including challenges and success stories.
- To discuss ways to integrate gender perspectives into all aspects of human rights advocacy and work.
